Valerie Taylor is an Irish handweaver from Donegal. She makes practical and fashionable bags and purses that are 100% made and sourced in Ireland.
Starting her journey in Coventry, Valerie graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Craft Design in 2000. She moved back to Ireland in 2006 with her family to raise her children in Donegal. She has always had a passion for hand weaving and decided to join the Fashion with Promotion degree course in Letterkenny’s LYIT before graduating in 2018. Valerie had a vision for sustainable fashion and wanted to bring her unique designs to life, which is why she joined the Fashion & Textile Design Centre in Derry and got the resources she needed to get her business started.
As for inspiration, Valerie adores her home county and draws on the beautiful landscape and colours of Donegal for her creations. In her own words – “I’m inspired by the wild beauty of Donegal. From the rugged and un-spoilt beaches, to the colours of the mountains and fields. I am mostly stirred by the beautiful red sky evenings and tend to use a lot of these colours in my palette.”
Valerie’s designs are 100% Irish and made with the best quality Irish yarns and fabrics. In her hand-woven pieces, the yarns used are from Donegal, her current tote bags are comprised of Mc Nutt’s herringbone and tweeds and the linings are in Baird Mc Nutt’s Irish linen. Each bag is ethically sourced and carefully hand-made.
With each of her designs, Valerie has made sustainable Irish pieces fashionable and practical. Her bags are designed, sourced, and handmade by herself in the North West of Ireland and include purses, travel pouches, and tote bags.
